Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)

This analysis technique consists of subjecting the sample to a controlled thermal cycle (generally scanning at temperature in a specified atmosphere) and of continuously comparing the differential heat flow required to maintain the test sample and an inert reference at the same temperature. Applied to polymers (thermoplastics, elastomers and thermosets), DSC reveals the thermal characteristics related to the change of physical state (fusion/crystallization and glass transition) or chemical state (crosslinking and oxidation).

Results: glass transition temperature, fusion temperature and enthalpy, crystallinity level, heat capacity and the temperatures of crosslinking, evaporation and foam expansion.
